Genesis 8-11

This particular part of scripture told me something I did not realize. It didn't just rain 40 days and 40 nights it was actually 150 days. It was just hard rain for 40 days and nights. It took 150 days to flood the earth and 261 for it to go away. Much different than the lesson I learned.

I also don't remember learning about the raven coming to and fro.

I like what McGee has to say about it...THE RAINS CEASE
We are given the record not only of the building up of the Flood but also of the prevailing and now the assuaging of the Flood. We are told that "God remembered Noah"—how lovely—and that "God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters assuaged." It did not happen just overnight. The buildup of the waters took over 150 days, and then there were 261 days in the assuaging. That looks to me like it is something more than just a local flood.

Chapter 9's word would be replenish. God tells Noah to "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth."(vs 1) In this verse he is like Adam in that he is to populate the earth. He then sins by getting drunk and Canaan delights in this. Ultimately this comes back to haunt him because he is cursed by Noah and his brothers are praised.

Chapter 10 gives the lineage of Noah's sons. I like what McGee says about it..Genesis 10:1

First we see the genealogy of Japheth (vv. Gen_10:2-5), then the genealogy of Ham (vv. Gen_10:6-20)—this was the outstanding people at the very beginning—and finally the genealogy of Shem (vv. Gen_10:21-32). Notice that throughout the Bible God follows this same pattern of giving the rejected line first and saying a word about it, then He drops that subject entirely and does not bring it up again. Finally, He gives the accepted line, the line which is leading to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Chapter 11 is the Tower of Babel. The earth spoke one language and then after they were scattered throughout the ends of the earth and spoke different languages and they didn't understand each other. The sin of the Shinarites (people in a plain in Shinar) appears to be immense pride. They said, Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves. This was open rebellion against God, an independence of God. Humility is often equated with trust and obedience, and conversely pride is related to independence and disobedience. Here the people came together to strengthen themselves and in pride to make a reputation for themselves lest they be scattered over the face of the whole earth. This appears to be in direct opposition to God’s command to spread out and fill up the whole earth (Gen_9:1). (BKC)

Genesis 4-7

This section of scripture talks about Cain and Abel , the lineage of Noah and the beginning of the story of God flooding the earth.

Cain and Abel is the story of rebellion against God. Cain worked the fields and Abel kept the flocks. When it came time for them to make their gifts to God Abel made his willingly but Cain wasn't so happy about it so Abel was shown favor. This angered Cain and ultimately caused him to kill Abel.

The next chapter seems boring because it is who begat who and so on. But it shows the lineage of Noah. I noticed that they seem to live hundreds of years. Some think that it is because they didn't keep time as we do. Other's think it is because they lived healthier lives and didn't have all the junk we now do. It is in this passage of Scripture that Methuselah is mentioned.

Chapter 6 begins the story of Noah and the flood. God told Noah that man was evil and he was saddened that he made them, he was going to flood the earth and that Noah and his family would be spared if they built an ark. He gave Noah specific information as to how the ark was to be built. The passage, then, refutes pagan beliefs by declaring the truth. The sons of God were not divine; they were demon-controlled. Their marrying as many women as they wished (possibly this is the origin of harems) was to satisfy their baser instincts. They were just another low order of creatures, though powerful and demon-influenced. Children of these marriages, despite pagan ideas, were not god-kings. Though heroes and “men of renown,” they were flesh; and they died, in due course, like all members of the human race. When God judges the world — as He was about to — no giant, no deity, no human has any power against Him. God simply allots one’s days and brings his end. (BKC)

In chapter 7 it is the account of the flood. I noticed something I hadn't noticed before that God told Noah to bring 7 sets of clean animals for eating. He made it very clear that they were to be clean animals. He then was to bring two of all other animals. After doing this Noah and his family entered the ark and it started to rain. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights and the water stayed on the earth 150 days.

Genesis 1-3

I am reading through the bible histrionically. I hope you join me on this journey. The bible I am using is the Women of Faith Bible and it is a New King James Bible.

I discovered a new word in reading this..the word is firmament. It means everything above earth.

God says on the Seventh day we are to rest. Does that mean Sunday? I don't think so. What if your job makes it so you have to work on Sunday are you sinning? I don't think so. I think that as long as you take one day during the week to rest and reflect on what God has done for you that you are keeping his command.

In this passage the Bible talks about God creating man and also creating woman. Without man we as women wouldn't be here. God created us to submit to men. I know this is all against popular culture but we need to submit to the men in our lives. I may not be married but I have a dad and I have to submit to him by obeying what he says. I may be 40 but still have to listen to what he says.

Eve sinned by listening to the serpent and eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Sometimes when we are talking about this part of scripture we leave out that it is the knowledge of good and evil. It wasn't so much about good and evil as much as the knowledge of it. After eating of the tree they realized they were naked and clothed themselves. As God was walking through the garden they were afraid and hid. Even though God knew what had happened he asked and gave them their consequences.

To Eve it was all the problems we as women have and to Adam he was told he had to work. They were also banished from the garden.

So I guess the moral of the story is even though it may look pretty and inviting that snake is not a good thing. Always ask God before doing anything and let him guide your life.

I have a hard time doing this and hope that as I read through the Bible and share my thoughts here that I will learn to do that.
